Let Passion Surprise You

I find that something surprises me almost everyday. Sometimes it’s a taste, other times a sensation, or perhaps a new emotion subtly seeping through the cracks of the generic happy, sad, tired and hungry. Life is surprising, and though millions of lives have been lived before us and billions will be lived after, no one will ever know exactly what it was like to be you, including you.
Our day to day lives often evolve at such a rapid pace, that we can only get a grip on who we are by examining what happened. What made us love the things we love and live the way we live? There seems to be no clear answer and yet beneath it all, the “data” that makes us who we are- the stats and numbers, there is something teeming inside each of us, passion.
Now if only we could figure out what our passions are and get carried away in the momentum of possibility.

Just a few minutes ago I finished a spectacular documentary entitled “Urbanized”, a film by Gary Hustwit (you can find it on Netflix). It tells the story of 21st century cities and the many problems facing an increasingly urbanized world, where 75% of the global population will live in cities by 2050 as opposed to the 25% of less than a century ago. It is absolutely fascinating, at least to me. And that’s the point. Passion is not only surprising, it’s subjective. What I love may have very little to do with what you love. Electrical engineering, nursing, and mountain biking don’t fall very high on my list of things I couldn’t live without, and yet these are things that fuel the passions of some of my closest friends.
Passion is a beautiful mystery and a powerful entity. Though elusive at times, when found passion is what makes normal people do great things. It is not up to us to decide our passions, but rather to unravel them, dig them out from within us, and most importantly to pursue them. Let your passions envelop you, let them move you to do incredible things, but most importantly let them surprise you, because there are few moments more magical than the one in which you discover your love for something new.
